The Arabic word ‘Al-Fatiha’ means the opening or the First. As it is the first chapter of Al-Quran it is named ‘Al-Fatiha’. In the Holy Quran there is a specific reference to this chapter (see 15:87).

(The meaning of Al-Baqarah is ‘The Bull’. It is the biggest chapter in the Holy- Quran. The chapter was named ‘The Bull’ because verses 67 to 71 describe a wonderful event related to the bull.)

Imran was the maternal grand-father of the Messenger Isa and the father of Maryam. The family of Imran denotes Maryam, her mother and the Messenger Isa. The verses 35,36,37 of this chapter narrate an important incident related to the family of Imran. Thus it is known as ‘The Family of Imran’.

More number of rules, regarding women, are present in this chapter than in any other chapter. As rules like property rights for women, family life, divorce, rights of inheritance,etc.. are mentioned in this chapter, it is titled ‘Women’.

Al Maidah (Food Plate)
CHAPTER 5
Al-Maidah- Food Plate
Total Verses : 120
The incidents mentioned in the verses 112,113,114 mention the word ‘Al-Maidah’. The generation of the messenger Isa, placed a demand that God should bring down from the sky a food plate with food. It is said in the above verses that on the basis of the messenger Isa’s Prayer, the food plate was (sent) brought down.

AL AN’AM – CATTLE

There were many superstitious beliefs among the ancient Arabs about the cattle. They have been warned in the verses 136,138,139,143 and 144 of this chapter. Hence,this chapter is named ‘Al Anam’.

AL A’RAF – BOUNDARY WALL
Total verses: 206
There will be a broad boundary wall between the Paradise and the Hell. Those who are not sent either to Paradise or to Hell will be kept there. That boundary wall is called A’raf. As the verses 46,47,48 and 49 in this chapter mention about this, this chapter is named Al A’raf.

Things seized in the battle is known as Al-Anfal. This name was given to the chapter because the word ‘Anfal’ is located in the first verse of this chapter.

AT TAWBAH (Repentance)
Chapter - 9
AT -TAWBAH – Repentance
Total verses: 129
Allah says in the verses 117 and 118 that He has forgiven the leader of the Prophets (peace be upon him), those who have come doing ‘hijra’, those who helped by giving refuge and in particular the three companions of the Prophet who have not taken part in the battle of ‘Tabuk’. As this chapter speaks about the forgiveness given to the whole mankind, this chapter is named ‘At-Tawbah’.
The other speciality about this chapter is the word-structure found in the beginning of each chapter, “Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem” meaning, “In the name of Allah the most Beneficent and the most Merciful” is not found in the beginning of this chapter. Many persons have given various reasons and philosophies about this. Usman (Rali), the third president (Khalifa) of the Islamic empire, who made the copy of the Holy Quran gave the following reason.
He says, “I think that the ninth chapter and the eighth chapter in the Holy Quran may be only one (a single) chapter. Both the chapters convey the same matter. Hence, I have left ‘Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem’ in the beginning of the nineth chapter.”
In addition, while mentioning about this he also says, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to call the scribes to write down immediately whenever a chapter was revealed. He will also point out where and in which chapter should the verse be placed. In this case he (messenger) has not mentioned whether these two chapters are two different chapters or they are only one chapter. So, I have not included Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem.”
Eventhough, there is difference of opinion about the authenticity of this matter, there is no difference of opinion that ‘Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem’ was not written in the beginning of this chapter.

Chapter 10
Yunus – (A Messenger of God)

It is mentioned in various chapters about Yunus, the messenger. In the 98th verse of this chapter, it is mentioned that those who have not accepted the messenger Yunus, when they saw the signs of God’s punishment, repented and accepted the only one God. It is named Yunus because the above mentioned verse contains this news.

The story of Yusuf, a messenger of God, is narrated in detail, in this chapter. The narration in full account, of the story of a single individual, is done only in this chapter. Hence, this chapter is named Yusuf. Allah Himself, mentions it in this beginning of this chapter, as a beautiful story.

In this chapter, certain important events in the (life) story of Ibrahim, the messenger of God, are mentioned. This chapter is named ‘Ibrahim’ because in 35th verse we find Ibrahim, after renovating ‘Ka’bahthulla’ , prays to Allah wishing that this place be made into a place of refuge. We find in the 37th verse, the news of the settlement of his family in the deserted expanse of ‘Makka’ by the command of Allah and we find in this verse, the incident in which God gives him two children, ‘ Ismail’ and ‘ Isac’ at his old age.

‘Hijr’ is name of the place where the people of ‘Tamud’ lived. As it is mentioned about these people in 82 – 84 verses of this chapter , it is given this name.

This chapter is named ‘Al Khaf’ because the verses 9 to 26 of this chapter contain the miraculous news of certain youths who deserted their nation and took refuge in a cave to establish belief in only one God.
