1. HEREAFTER

 1. HEREAFTER
Everything including the heaven, the Sun, the planets and all living creatures like the human beings, the beasts and the plants will be subjected to total annihilation on that day when Allah alone will persevere. Such a day is named as dooms day, last day and a day when ‘Sur; will be blown.
Then all men will be resurrected and questioned; they will be judged after the enquiry; righteous persons will get bliss; the evil-doers will be punished tormenting; such an existence will have no end.
Such a day is also named (as) the day Judgment, the Hereafter, the other work, the day of gathering, the day more could help, the day of returning, the day of recompense, the day of inquest, the day of beneficence, the day of resurgence, the day of meeting the lord, world, day of havoc, the day of appearing before the lord, the day ‘none could elude, the day of Awakening and so on……. This day is entitled by many such names.
Certain expressions such as doubtless day, magnificent day, that day, that hour, the day Assured, the day totally devoid of doubts-would generally refer to both ‘the day of annihilation and ‘the day of resurrection’. When ‘that day’ would come, is a mystery which is known only to Allah. It would be regarded that such a belief in ‘[that day’ would greatly help men to live righteously in this world.
(For more information, see under the title ‘Qiyamat- The Last Day’ in the Subject Index).

3. BELIEVING THE THINGS HIDDEN.

 3. BELIEVING THE THINGS HIDDEN.
Usually anything hidden or concealed, include all those things which cannot be perceived by the five senses.
Nevertheless, according to Islamic belief, the phrase ‘believing in the hidden things’ would mean ‘believing’ in certain specific matters alone.
It is mentioned in the Quranic verse that 2:3 believing in the things unseen means we must believe in Allah, Angels, heaven, the heavenly pleasures, the Hell, the various punishments which will be inflicted in the Hell, the Day of Judgment and the turmoil that would occur on that day, even though they are hidden to our eyes.

4. PREVIOUS REVELATIONS

 4. PREVIOUS REVELATIONS
As Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) ), Books had been revealed to the messengers, we should not think Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was the first Prophet to receive a Book from Allah. Each Prophet who had been sent before him was revealed with a Book in his own vernacular language.
A few Muslims say, ”only four Books, namely Taurath, Zabur, Injeel and Quran are revealed upon mankind by Allah. But this view is incorrect. It is true that the names of only these four Books have been in the Quran. But in fact the Quran itself assures that all the (Anbia) Prophets (pbut) were revealed with Books.
 (Refer Quranic verses 2:213, 14:4, 19:12, 57:25, 87:18, 18)
All the Anbia Prophets (pbut) were given Books. Yet, their names are not mentioned in the Quran.
Some people have identified the Book into two types. They are ‘Kitab’ which they assume as big volumes, and Suhoof which they assume as booklets.
They also say that the four Books (Quran, Taurath, Injeel and Zabur) revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Prophet Musa, Prophet Isa, and Prophet Dawud only are considered ‘Kitab’ (big volumes) and all other Anbia Prophets (pbut) had received only ‘Suhuf’ (booklet).
But there is no evidence found either in Quran or in true Hadith to prove this. They would also say that the Book known as Kitab only was revealed to Prophet and not Suhuf.
This is also incorrect because it is stated in the Quranic verse 98:2 that Prophet would recite from the Suhuf.
So it is understood that the words, Kitab and Suhuf, have the same meaning and not words which have different meanings.
Believing in the previous Books does not mean that we must follow them. It clearly means that we have to believe that Muhammad (pbuh) alone was not revealed with the Book but other Prophets (pbut) were also given Books.
The Quran which insists on having belief on the previous Books also mentions in many places, ”In those books human ideas have been added, changed, concealed and amended.” (Refer Quranic verses, 2:75, 79, 3:78, 4:46, 5:13, 41)
In addition we must also believe that nowhere in this world we can find any Book except Quran, which has not suffered any change.

6. IS ALLAH INCAPABLE?

 6. IS ALLAH INCAPABLE?
Allah is All-mighty. If Allah wants to create anything, it will be done if Allah says “Be”.
Certain phrases such as “Allah conspires”, “Allah jests”, “Allah deceives” are widely found in the Quran.
Some people may think that only those who are incapable, weak and lacking courage need conspire, jest and deceive. But why does Allah who has the power to create anything by merely saying “Be”, need to scheme and conspire. Ofcourse their view seems to be correct.
But we find that in most of the languages, such usages imply some other meaning instead of the literal meaning. For example, when we say, ”If you transgress, I will also transgress”, we will understand that the word ‘transgress’, which comes first has been used to mean actual transgression (violation) but the word ‘transgress’ which appears next (I will also transgress) has been used to denote retaliation. In other words, (instead of saying ‘if you transgress, I will also transgress’ it can be said “if you transgress, I will also retaliate”). If we retaliate after a person has transgressed against us that cannot be transgression.
Similarly the sentence such as “if they jest, Allah will also jest, has been used in the sense” Allah will impose punishment for such a jest”. The sentence “they conspire Allah also conspires “has been used in the sense “Allah will overcome their conspiracy”.
Any sentence such as “if you do, I will do,” should be understood only in this manner. Such sentences are used to appreciate rather than reprimanding.
For example Allah may say, “If you remember me, I will also remember you;”if you are grateful I will also be grateful. In fact Allah need not either remember us or be grateful to us. Such sentences only mean that Allah will give reward for those who remember Him and are grateful to Him. If it is said ‘Allah curses’ it should be understood as ‘Allah punishes’.

7. CHALLENGE OF THE QURAN

 7. CHALLENGE OF THE QURAN
It is ofcourse true that Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who had been illiterate. During the life time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) few Arabs who were literate, had been great scholars in Arabic language and were able to create poems in high literary style.
The divine Book which was brought by the illiterate Prophet excelled the literary pieces of those scholars. That was the only literary piece which was free from any adulteration or lies. Hence it was challenged thus:
If you say that this surpassing literature (Book) has been fabricated by the illiterate Muhammad (pbuh) then you scholars produce such one”.
Till today nobody has faced that challenge which was thrown towards the whole mankind.

8. PARTNERS IN PARADISE

 8. PARTNERS IN PARADISE
It is stated in the various chapters of Quran that there are chaste spouses in the Paradise. In certain chapters it is also said that there are female spouses. So certain people raise the question, “Will there be no such spouses in the Hereafter for those women who have carried out good deeds in this world?”
To know the answer for the above question we need to understand the grammatical rule of the Arabic language. Under all situations there are separate words for male sex and female sex in Arabic language.
For example, in Arabic language, if men are commanded to pray, the Arabic word “sallu” must be used and if women are ordered to pray, the Arabic word “Salina” must be used.
If both the sexes are ordered at the same time each order must be made twice in the words pertaining to their sex.
In order to avoid this repetition most of the commands in the Quran are made using the word pertaining to male sex.
Even during the life time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) women had asked him about this. The Quranic verse 33:35 was revealed when Ummu Salma (RA) asked, “why the Quran does not tell about women, but says only about men?” (Refer Ahmad 25363). It is said in the above Quranic verse 33:35 for both males and females, there are equal rewards. It means that everything which is assured for males is also assured for the females. A few other Quranic verses (3:195, 4:124, 16:97 and 40:40) have also reflected the same idea.
In the Quranic verse 4:124, it is said that, neither the male nor the female who behaved righteously would be done even an atom of injustice.
When both males and females have behaved righteously it would be unfair to give more rewards for males alone.
Allah says that both males and females will be satisfied when they would be rewarded in the Hereafter.
 (Refer Quran: 5:119, 9:100, 22:59, 58:22, 88:9, and 98:8)
Therefore Allah will not forsake or ignore women without offering them spouses in the Hereafter while giving companions to the males.
But there is no evidence to prove the claim of a few that a woman would get the same husband (spouse) with whom she lived in this world, such assumption will raise many questions such as “what would be the position if a husband were to be an evildoer and wife were to be righteous?”What if a woman having destined in her life two husbands and both had been righteous then, to whom would that wife be made a spouse?”
We have evidence that the wives of Prophet alone will be spouses for him in the Paradise also. (Refer Bukhari 7100 and 7101). There is no evidence to prove that all other men will have their own wives as spouses in the Paradise.
Prophet has instructed the people to pray for the dead by saying, “(Let Allah) give him in the Hereafter a spouse better than the spouse he had in this world”. (Refer Muslim 1525, Ahmad 25417)
It was the practice of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to make such prayers for both male and female without any discrimination, it is understood from this that better spouses are available for both males and females in the Hereafter.
It is apparent to us from the above verses, even though certain commands appear as if specifying males, they are applicable to females also.
Similarly, regarding spouses in the Paradise, though there is specification of males, if will be befitting to Allah’s justice only when we decide, keeping as evidence the verses that say that the same is applicable to females also.
(Refer Quran 2:25, 3:15, 4:57, 36:56, 37:48, 38:52, 44:54, 52:20, 55:56, 55:70, 56:22, 56:35 and 78:33).

9. QURAN NEVER MISLEADS

 9. QURAN NEVER MISLEADS
In the Quranic verse (2:26), it is said, “Thereby, Allah misleads many.” Some people say that it means, “By this Book?” which shows their ignorance.
In this verse Allah uses ‘thereby’ only when He comments about citing example. So it should be meant as, ”He will mislead by this example.”It should not be meant as, “He will mislead by this Book.” because in this verse 2:26, we do not find any word specifying the Book.
Moreover Allah has revealed the Quran only to guide the people and not to mislead them. If we misinterpret the Quranic words as said above, it will not only be a grave offence but also putting blame on the Quran.

10. PURE FROM ALL WEAKNESSES

 10. PURE FROM ALL WEAKNESSES
The phrase ‘Pure from all weaknesses’ has been used as a translation of the Arabic word ‘Subhan’. The Arabic word ‘Subhan’ would mean ‘purity’.
The word ‘purity’ which generally means cleanliness, that is, keeping away from dirt, taint etc.,
On the other hand, the Arabic word ‘Subhan’ has a deeper meaning than that.
‘Subhan’ would actually mean keeping away from all attributes which could tarnish “divinity”.
It would mean being free from (all the inevitable earthly bindings such as) sleep, inability, weakness, failure, answering the nature’s call, spouse, children, parents, hunger and thirst. The word ‘Subhan’ should not be used for anybody else other than Allah.
In the Arabic language there are different words which denote purity i.e., being free from dirt, impurity, taint etc. , but the word ‘Subhan’ is not used in such situations.
 (Refer Quran 2:32, 2:116, 3:191, 4:171, 5:116, 6:100, 7:143, 9:31, 10:10, 10:18, 10:68, 12:108, 16:1, 16:57, 17:1, 17:43, 17:93, 17:108, 19:35, 21:22, 21:26, 21:87, 23:91, 24:16, 25:18, 27:8, 28:68, 30:40, 34:41, 36:36, 36:83, 37:159, 37:180, 39:4, 39:67, 43:13, 43:82, 52:43, 59:23 and 68:29)

11. CAN WE PROSTRATE (DO SAJDA) TO HUMANBEINGS?

 11. CAN WE PROSTRATE (DO SAJDA) TO HUMANBEINGS?
We learn from the Quranic verses 2:34, 7:11, 15:29, 30, 31, 17:61, 18:50, 20:116, 38:72, that after having created Adam (pbuh) and after having exposed his abilities Allah ordered the angles to prostrate to the first man (Adam (pbuh) ).
Citing these verses as evidence certain people have been arguing that we can prostrate to elders, saints and religious heads. This is totally incorrect.
Actually in the social set up, established by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), there never existed such a practice. In order to understand this even more clearly, we need to acquire knowledge of certain important matters.
Even before the advent of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) the Arabs had been using the words such as ‘Salath’ (prayer), ‘Saum’ (fasting) and ‘Zakath’ (charity). However, they were not used in the same sense as we are using them now.
We use the word ‘Salath’ to denote worship. We think Salath means worship. But its literal meaning is ‘prayer’ and the Arabs had been using the word ‘Salath’ only in that sense.
Prophet used this word ‘Salath’ to specify a particular prayer involving particular activities.
Similarly the word ‘Saum’ is not used to denote fasting. But before the Prophet the word was used to mean ‘controlling’.
Islam did not coin new words to name prayers. Instead it chose the suitable words from the words that were in practice at that time to name the prayers.
Likewise the word ‘Sajda’ also was in use in the Arabic language, even before the life time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
Actually we have understood that ‘Sajda’ means prostrating in such a manner that the forehead, nose, two palms, two knees and
The fingers of the two legs touch the ground. Before Prophet had given such a definition, the word ‘Sajda’ had not had that meaning. It had been used in the sense “total humility”. All acts reflecting humility were as ‘Sajda’.
Not only in the dictionary, but also in the Quran, the word ‘Sajda’ has been used in many places as ‘total humility’.
Let us now analyze the following Quranic verse
“In this town, you enter this gate prostrating (or bowing with humility)”
(Refer Quran 2:58, 4:154, 7:161)
Here the word prostration will only imply the dictionary meaning humility. It should not be considered (as) the Islamic way of prostration. No person can enter the gate while he is in such a prostration. It is stated in the Quranic verse (22:18) that not only men, but also the Sun, the moon, the stars, the trees, all living creatures and the mountains and so on prostrate Allah.
We very well know that there are no faces, noses, hands and knees to the Sun, the moon the stars and the trees. They don’t have a back to stoop and prostrate. Mountains and trees are stationary and they do not even move from one place to another; but Allah says that they also prostrate to Him.
The Sun, the moon and the stars revolve, rotate and perform their duties as planned by Allah; without any rest. Their prostration refers only to this performance. The blossoming and the
Yield of the fruits can itself be called the ‘Sajda’ of the trees.
The mountains do the work of preventing the earth from displacement as ordered by Allah. That is their ‘Sajda’. On the whole all creation has accepted the supremacy of Allah against their inferiority and is therefore obedient to Allah. Here ‘Sajda’ refers to submission.
It is clearly illustrated in the Quranic verse 12:4, 13:15, 16:48, 49 that the word ‘Sajda’ has been used only in the sense “submission”.
The verses stating that the Angels perform ‘Sajda’ to Adam (pbuh), must also be understood in the same sense (i. e submission). There are other reasons reinforcing the above view.
The Angels are not like men. They do not have any specific physical appearance. There is no evidence to prove that they are having organs, which help in prostration. At times the Angel named ‘Jibrael’ had appeared before the Prophet in the human form. But we cannot assert that it was his original form because on some other occasion he had exhibited his appearance to Prophet stretching out himself between the earth and the heaven.
Angels also have wings (Refer index, Angels). Hence, we cannot consider the Angels like us. We can only assume that they submitted in which ever manner they could submit,
For argument sake, even if they had prostrated to Adam (pbuh), just as we prostrate to Allah-we cannot follow that. The Angels did so only because Allah had ordered them to prostrate to Adam (pbuh).
Neither Allah, nor Prophet has ordered us to prostrate to elders or eminent people. Instead, Allah and Prophet have banned this.
“And from among his signs are the night and the day, and the Sun and the moon, prostrate not. To the Sun, nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah who created them, if you really worship him….”
Quran 41:37.
We are commanded to prostrate only to Allah, the creator, not to any of his creatures.
When Mu’aad (RA) and Salman (RA) the companions of Prophet offered themselves to prostrate (Sajda) to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Prophet prohibited them. Prophet has also proclaimed that no man should prostrate (Sajda) another man. (Refer books: Tirmizi, Ibn-Maja, Bukhari, Ibn-Hibbon, Hakim, Ahmad, Tabrani)
When there is a clear restriction for this we cannot carry out the order which was laid upon the Angels. We can move with the elders or the eminent people humbly and politely, but Islam never permits to bow and touch their (elders, eminent people, saints, religious heads or any bigwig in the society) feet and prostrate (Sajda) to them as a sign of respect.

12. WHICH IS THE PARADISE WHERE ADAM (pbuh) LIVED?

 12. WHICH IS THE PARADISE WHERE ADAM (pbuh) LIVED?
In the Quranic verses 2:35, 7:19, 7:22, 7:27 and 20:121, it is said that “Prophet Adam (pbuh) was expelled from the Paradise”.
Two different interpretations are given to this Quranic verse. The word ‘Jannath’ is used in the place of the translated English word ‘Paradise’. The heavenly gardens that will be rewarded to the righteous persons in the Hereafter are also called ‘Jannath’. The gardens present on this earth are also called ‘Jannath’.
The word ‘Jannath’ has been used in these two senses in the Quran. Many people say that Prophet Adam (pbuh) who remained in the Paradise was expelled since he violated the command of Allah.
But some other people are of the opinion that the Quranic verse 2:30 declares that Adam (pbuh) was created on the earth and as Shaitan cannot enter the Paradise and mislead anybody in the Paradise. Adam (pbuh) was only made to remain in the garden which was set for him on the earth and it was only from there he was expelled.
So which-ever of the above two views is accepted, that would neither impair the basic concept of Islam nor the teachings to be learnt from that event.

13. THE FORBIDDEN TREE

 13. THE FORBIDDEN TREE
In the Quranic verses 2:35, 7:19, 7:20, 7:22 and 20:120, it is stated, ”Do not approach this tree”. Many have given different interpretations regarding this. It is not mentioned either in the Quran or in the Hadith, the identity of that tree.
It is not important to know the identity of that tree. The matter which is to be known is that after Adam (pbuh), having been given all comforts, could not control himself from approaching that tree. That had been the reason for which he was expelled from the Paradise.
Hence whoever speaks of the matter not mentioned in the Quran or Hadith, will be considered guilty of having fabricated stories in the name of Allah.

14. HOW DID ADAM (PBUH) SEEK FORGIVENESS?

 14. HOW DID ADAM (PBUH) SEEK FORGIVENESS?
In the Quranic verse 2:37 it is said that, Adam (pbuh) learnt a few words from Allah. Though the details of the word are not stated here, they are stated in Quranic verse 7:23. We learn from the Quranic verse 7:23 that only by uttering those words both of them sought forgiveness from Allah and that Allah also pardoned them. We also learn from that Allah will pardon one only when he repents and apologizes.
It is fictitious to say that Adam (pbuh) apologized to Allah, making the Prophet an intercessor. Scholars have said that this message which is found in the book ‘Tirmizhi’, ‘Hakim’ and also in some other books is just a fabrication. It is because such fabrication is contrary to the verse 7:23 which explains clearly how Adam (pbuh) apologized.
This message is being conveyed through Abdul Rahman Bin Zaidh bin Aslam. He has been notorious in the fabrication of matters. Hence to believe in that story will be against the Quran.

 15. WHY DID ALLAH ORDER”EXIT ALL OF YOU”?
In fact Allah expelled out only Adam (pbuh) and his wife from the Paradise. Some people may think why Allah in the Quranic verse 2:38, says, “Exit all of you”.
They have been carrying in them entire mankind who would be born till the dooms day. Hence the phrase, ‘Exit all you’ has been used considering the offspring that would be procreated from them.
Allah might have also said this (Exit all of you) in order to hint them that the mankind will proliferate and branch out through them.

16. EMINENT ISRAELITES

 16. EMINENT ISRAELITES

In the Quranic verses 2:47 and 2:112, Allah says that He had placed the children of Israel in high status, over and above the entire mankind.
The Islamic principle is such that no man can get any superiority or excellence on the basis of birth. (Refer, Quran 2:111, 3:75, 49:13)
Therefore the above verses only refer to the favors such as rule, power, and affluence, bestowed upon the Israelites. A number of messengers including Yaqub, Yusuf, Musa, Harun, Dawud, Yahya and Isa (peace them) were chosen from among the people of Israel. This privilege was not given to other people. The Quranic verse 5:20 clearly explains it.
According to the Quranic verses 2:143, 3:110, as for as the religious duties are concerned, the people of the Messenger Muhammad (pbuh) excelled any other people in preaching good things and forbidding the evils. This unique excellence was not given to the people of Israel. In the Quranic verses 2:47, 2:122, ‘had exalted’, the past perfect tense (of the word ‘exalt’) has been used. So, it is clear that this will only refer to the favours given to the Israelites, once upon a time, and will not mean that they will be given favours throughout the ages.
We understand from the Quranic verses 4:46-47, 5:13, 5:60, 5:64, 5:78, that the Israelites who were once privileged and preferred, had to face the anger and curse of Allah.

17. WILL INTERCESSION HELP?

 17. WILL INTERCESSION HELP?
Regarding this there are three different views:
1. There is no intercession at all.
2. The Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh), the pious and righteous men will intercede for whom they like.
3. There is intercession but with certain conditions.
The first two of the above three views are the views of those people who have insufficient knowledge of the Quran.
Those people who totally reject the concept of intercession by taking into account only those Quranic verses which imply that there cannot be intercession at all, do not analyze all the Quranic verses pertaining to intercession.
Those people who do not look deeply at the verses pertaining to intercession hold the second view.
Both these views are incorrect. Those who observe only the Quranic verse 2:48, 2:123, 2:254, 6:51, 6:70, 6:94, 26:100, 32:4, 36:23, 39:43, 44, 74:48, not only say that there is no intercession in the Hereafter but also say that intercession will not benefit.
Let us now analyze the following Quranic verses:
“…. . who is he that can intercede with him except with his permission?….”Quran 2:255

“No intercessor (can plead with him) except with his permission……”- Quran 10:3
We may understand from the above two verses that nobody can intercede without Allah’s permission. Besides, Allah will not say this if he does not to permit.
Let us now analyze some other verses
“…. . and they cannot intercede except for him with whom he is pleased…….”- Quran: 21:28
“None will have the power of intercession but such one who has received permission (or promise) from the most beneficent (Allah)-Quran 19:87
“On that day no intercession will benefit, except the one for whom the most Beneficent (Allah) has given permission and whose word is acceptable to him…. .”Quran 20:109
“Intercession with him benefits not, except for him whom he permits…. .”- Quran 34:23
“And those whom they invoke instead of him have no power of intercession except those who bear witness to the truth (i.e., believed in the oneness of Allah and obeyed his order) and they know (the facts about the oneness of Allah) ” - Quran43:86
“(And there are many Angels in the heavens, whose) intercession will benefit nothing except after Allah has given permission for whom he wills and pleases…”- Quran: 53:26
The above Quranic verses clearly state that certain persons will be permitted to intercede and such intercession will be benefitting.
A few people who have insufficient knowledge of Quran say that there is no intercession in the Hereafter. The above Quranic verses clearly prove that such views are wrong.
Everyone should aspire to reach Paradise themselves without anybody’s intercession by securing high ranks in the earthly life and everyone should plead to Allah only that.
But it is incorrect and improper to plead, “O lord, bestow upon me the intercession of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).”
Prophet also never taught us “Ask Allah for my intercession. “” He only said that sinners would get his intercession. He has also said that his intercession might be received through some deeds.
Nobody knows to whom Allah will give permission in the Hereafter. So, no one living in this earth should ask “O saint, please intercede for me in the Hereafter. “Such a request would be but interference in the authority of Allah.
Those people who had been living in Makkah became polytheists only because they pleaded for intercession (Refer Quran 10:18).
Since Allah alone will decide who can intercede and for whom intercession can be given, intercession should not be required from anybody. When Allah himself decides to forgive us, he will call one and say intercede for him.”Infact the intercession is only for name sake but the final decision is with Allah alone. (Refer Bukhari 99, 335, 448, 3340, 4476, 4712, 6304, 6305, 6565, 6566, 6570, 7410, 7440, 7474, 7509 and 7510).

18. FORTY NIGHTS OF MUSA (pbuh)

 18. FORTY NIGHTS OF MUSA (pbuh)
The Quranic verses 2:51 and 7:142 reveal that Allah had commanded Musa (pbuh) to reach ‘Mount Tur’ for receiving a Book in the written form, in thirty days. The term (thirty days) was further extended to forty days, and on the fortieth day Allah bestowed upon Musa (pbuh) a Book inscribed (written) on Tablets.
In fact, Musa (pbuh) had been made a Prophet even before the Book was given to him. He had been preaching to his community. He had been opposing Firaun. The Book was bestowed upon him only later.
So it is clear that besides sending down the Book to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), messages other than Books were also revealed to them in different ways. This also bears an evidence against those who wrongly assume that Book (Holy Book) alone is the message of God.

19. THE ISRAELITES WHO WORSHIPPED THE CALF

 19. THE ISRAELITES WHO WORSHIPPED THE CALF
Musa (pbuh) had been invited by Allah to the ‘Mount Tur’ for receiving the Book. When Musa (pbuh) had set off to the ‘Mount Tur’, one of the members of his community, named Samiri, collected the jewels from the people, melted them and formed an idol of a calf.
And when he took some dust from the footsteps of Musa (pbuh) and threw it into the idol of the calf, a sound was heard therein. Samiri made the people believe him by saying, “This is only god; Musa (pbuh) is misled and also he made the people believe him and also made them worship the idol of the calf (Refer Quran 20:96).
The sound which advanced from it was sufficient for them to believe in the divinity of the idol. They never understood the fact that the idol would not speak and also would not reply to their words. Prophet Musa (pbuh) burnt it and scattered its ash into the sea, thus proving that the idol was not God. (Refer Quran 20:89, 20:97).
At times, some people may try to deceive us by applying certain tricks which our senses cannot understand. Based on that, during such moments, we should not come to a conclusion that such a person can do anything. We must only understand that there must be some plan behind that.
We should understand that such a person who performs one or two tricks is none but a human like us in all other matters. Bearing in mind that such persons have natural instincts and reflex actions such as eating, drinking, excreting, becoming sick and old, we should understand their weaknesses. The Quranic verse 20:97 teaches us this lesson.
(Refer Quran 2:51, 2:54, 2:92, 2:93, 4:153, 7:148, 7:149, 7:152, 20:85-98).

20. IS IT A COMMAND TO COMMIT SUICIDE?

 20. IS IT A COMMAND TO COMMIT SUICIDE?
Certain scholars have understood literally the Quranic verse 2:54, where Musa (pbuh) commands his people to commit suicide. They say that Prophet Musa (pbuh) commanded them thus, when he was enraged to find them worshipping the idol of the calf. Seeing his community turned against monotheism, Prophet Musa (pbuh) became very angry. His anger was such that he even threw down the tablets (Book) which he was holding in his hand and he even dragged and hit Harun (pbuh), his brother cum Prophet.
Under such circumstances, the human tendency is to say ‘get lost’ if they got angry towards any person. It does mean that they actually intend the ‘death’ of those persons on whom they are angry. Such words are uttered only out of resentment and are said as an expression and exposure of anger.
Certain people say that the words of Musa (pbuh) -‘commit suicide’- also must be understood in the same sense. This view only is found to be reasonable. It is because no Prophet would have commanded the people to commit suicide.
The Quranic verse (2:56) following the above verse 2:54, says that Allah raised them, after death. This denotes that they did not commit suicide. It is understood from the Quranic verses that Allah seized them with thunder bolt when they annoyed Musa (pbuh) to show them Allah directly. It should be understood contextually and their end was due to the thunder bolt only.
Moreover the Quranic verse says that they were first struck with thunderbolt for they asked Musa (pbuh) to show them Allah and only after that they worshipped the idol of the calf.
It is confirmed that the incident of thunderbolt occurred first. The idol of the calf was worshipped by them later.
